Hi! I'm Katie Hughes, nice to meet you!

I've been searching for a way to combine my loves of science and art for a very long time, and

Same Wavelength is my way of

doing just that.

My educational journey started when I was a young child, fully immersed in and amazed by animation and science themed television shows and video games. I want to bring that energy and wonder to the world, and this is my story!

THE STORY

MFA Studio, 2023

When I was 13, I knew I wanted to be a physicist when I grew up. In college, I discovered that I liked writing about science more than I liked coding and data analysis.

Confused on whether to switch my focus to my other interests in neuroscience, philosophy, or art, I chose to study all four fields including physics to varying degrees.

I left Stanford with a philosophy major, Master's, and a triple minor. Confused where to go next, I spent a year considering law school, and ultimately wound up at CalArts studying graphic design instead.

Throughout the pandemic, I spent three years earning my MFA and diving into art forms new and old to me: calligraphy, film photography, type design, animation, watercolor and oil painting, Risograph and letterpress printing, and textile design.

Studying design helped me turn my love of writing and research from philosophy into a way to make beautiful physical things that people might want to look at - t-shirts and posters and short films.

When it came time to develop a thesis project, I realized what I wanted to make most was artwork that was educational. If I could make a poster that made someone think about endangered frogs or black holes, then I felt I had contributed some good to the world.

My thesis, SUPERMASSIVE, was a theoretical streetwear brand using the aesthetic of physics concepts to bring science to popular culture.

It didn't fully make sense, but two years of experimentation and development has turned it into this, the ultimate culmination of my work: Same Wavelength.

I strive to make my designs beautiful, exciting, and bring a sense of child-like wonder about the world. Each poster, mug, etc. comes with the added digital explanation of the accompanying concepts. My hope is that every time you look at a Same Wavelength object, it inspires you to go out into the world and learn a little bit more about it!

                      Thanks for reading :)
